THE MAINOMA LEGACY; CELEBRATING AN ICON AT 50

The world does not celebrate ideas, but achievements. It does not celebrate dreams but impacts. While some impacts may be easily forgotten, others outlive generations.
Despite his self effacing and unassuming but result oriented approach to leadership, the monumental achievements of Prof. Muhammad Akaro Mainoma, “that rare gem steering the affairs of Nasarawa State University, Keffi” have continued to earn him respect and affection of the university community and even the attention of waka-pass Nigerians. However, Nigerians who appreciate good leadership will always hold this astute academician and administrative guru to a very high esteem.

Ones view about Mainoma may depend on the perspective with which you look at him. In my view, however, he is better described as “an icon of educational transformation in Nigeria” and a “patriot in the attainment of the vision of a better society”.
No wonder, the face of things rocketed from inertia, upon his timely appointment as the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University only about a year ago. Nasarawa indigenes must indeed be grateful to Governor Almakura, for identifying and giving opportunity to such a man of impeccable credentials, one who is committed to service delivery. Within this short period of time, his Libra horoscope personality and leadership sagacity have been brought to bare and this gives the younger generation hope that the quest for true leadership in Africa, will soon be over.
The stabilized academic calender, prompt release of students’ results, zero tolerance for cultism and other related offences, good working relationship with students and staff unions, improved workers welfare package, construction of the international standard Central Research Laboratory and remodeling of the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and university gate, construction of roads and drainage system, transparency and observance of due process in the allocation of contracts, construction of boreholes and provision of other alternative sources of water, provision of affordable hostel accommodation, upgrading of the Sports complex, completion of the faculty of education, and other infrastructural and environmental embodiment of the university, too numerous to mention in print, is a clear testimony of Mainoma’s ability to phantom emergent depths, as evident in the revolutionary approaches and pragmatism he adopts in handling the affairs of leadership at the institution.
I am fully convinced that the exodus towards a better Nigeria as exemplified by the Gardin Lafia, would continue in the right direction and his impacts never be forgotten in a hurry, when Nigerians would celebrate 100 years of independence on 1st October, 2060. On that day, Nasarawa indigenes, and other Nigerians who have received the positive impacts of his selflessness and dedication to service, will have the cause to smile and tell the world that the journey of a transformed NSUK started with the Mainoma legacy.
To consolidate on these strides however, the state government in collaboration with security agencies may have to put more efforts in the fight against armed robbery and theft, so as to make Keffi more habitable, while safeguarding the already booming economic fortunes of the town.
